How do you maintain a fire door?

Regular checks need to be carried out on fire doors to ensure that all their components are in the condition required to do their job effectively. This will include detailed examination of the state of the door itself, along with all fittings, intumescent seals and self-closing devices.

How often should you maintain a fire door?

Ideally, checks should be carried out by a competent person every six months, with expert maintenance conducted by a trained professional every year. Fire doors that are in constant use (e.g. at busy entrance or exit points) may need more regular checks, as they are likely to suffer wear and tear more quickly than one which is mainly kept closed (e.g. the door of a store cupboard).

Who can carry out fire door maintenance?

A ‘competent person’ can make regular, periodic checks but you should get a trained professional to carry out detailed maintenance.
