Can you have glazed fire doors?

You can have glazed doors, and they are a good choice if you’re after a more attractive finish or if you want to let more light through. However, it is important that any glass used has the same level of fire resistance as the door itself. That’s because the fire door carries out an important role in fire safety – helping to prevent a fire and any smoke from spreading – so any glazing used needs to be able to do that just as effectively.

What is glazing on fire doors?

Glazing on a fire door is a special type of glass that is able to provide effective protection against fire. To do that effectively, it needs to have the same rating as the door in which it is fitted – the required fire rating will have been determined by your fire risk assessment.

What kind of glass is used for fire doors?

The glass used in fire doors is usually made from layers of toughened glass with intumescent layers inserted. The outer glass will shatter under the fire, but the heat will cause the intumescent layer to expand and fill any space and thus prevent flames and smoke from passing through. Further protection is usually provided by a wire frame that both gives extra strength and holds any shattered glass in place.
